Choose ONE of the following options:

1. The Growing Drawing:  Influenced by the David Hockney’s photo-collages and artist Dawn Clements and her expanding drawings, start by documenting (draw from observation) a single object, using any drawing or painting medium on a sheet of 9” x 12” paper.  Use a combination of line and value (and possibly color). Add another sheet and draw another object. Add more pages and draw more objects. Indicate the actual space and settings you observe to create visual bridges between the objects.  You may also “vignette” parts of the composition–that is, draw background elements that lead the eye across the larger composition and just leave empty any parts that don’t contribute to the sense of Design Principles like Movement and Unity.  Your expanding drawing will show a panoramic view of a space, with changing perspectives as the viewer looks from object to object. You may “shape” the drawing by changing the orientation of the papers. The drawing or painting should use at least EIGHT 9” x 12” sheets drawn or FOUR painted.  
2. Drawing into Abstraction: Make a series of works that start as carefully observed Realism, and evolve into abstraction.  You may work from landscape or still life (many artists find that shallow-space still life translates into abstraction readily).  Like Mondrian focusing the GRID and LINE in his trees or Lesley Vance focusing on the CHIAROSCURO VALUE of her reliefs, make your move to abstraction focus on one of the Elements of Design (LINE,SHAPE, TEXTURE, VALUE, COLOR) that you emphasize.  Make at least one observed image, one transitional image, and two abstract images. You may use any drawing or painting media you wish. Make each drawing at least 9” x 12”. The drawing or painting should use at least EIGHT 9” x 12” sheets drawn or FOUR painted.  

Spend at least 8 hours working on this artwork.  Once it is completed write a short statement discussing your process, the use of Principles and Elements of Design and the attitude toward  the subject you held while working.

Document your artwork, any important evidence of process and the statement and submit those to me (clowr001@gmail.com) by the end of the day, Sunday July 28.
